Kangular: An Innovative & Simple Outdoor Screen Solution

Back in October 2018, the team at Kangular approached Cambridge Design Technology (CDT) with their innovative new concept for a contemporary outdoor screen system.
“We found CDT whilst browsing on the web, looking for a Professional CAD and Design studio to model up the Kangular product range and produce high specification manufacturing drawings. From the start of the project, the team fully understood our requirements and gave valid input to the design, look and feel of the Kangular range”, commented Paul Raven, Director at Kangular.

The project

Taking the original concept, Cambridge Design Technology adapted the system to suit manufacturing methods and provided the manufacturing data to allow the system to be made. Using modern high-tech stainless steel tubular laser cutting

technology and state of the art laser etching systems to assist in ease of assembly but also provide a flexible branding system, the goal was to achieve a UK manufactured product using 316 stainless steel in brushed and polished versions and sustainably sourced hardwood.

Working with the Kangular team, Cambridge Design Technology were able to create an adaptable system which could be used as a contemporary garden screen or a decorative sculptural centrepiece.
The Kangular screen is a flexible system which can be set into soil similar to traditional fence post systems, or can be bolted to hard standings, patios and terraces.

Commenting on the project, Jon Plumb, MD at Cambridge Design Technology, said: “It’s great to work on a project like this where immediately you can visualise the product in a real world installation. The Kangular screen system is an extremely stylish and innovative architectural design solution for decorative screening.”

The results

Kangular and Cambridge Design Technology have worked together to create a unique system, which is suited to providing privacy screens giving a modern, sleek and elegant feel and also customer specified patterns for decorative feature centrepieces suited to domestic and commercial installations.

The system has been designed to be easy to install using traditional post installation methods and easy to fit wooden slats, which are configurable by the user. With the flexible laser etching system, it’s possible for customers to brand the product or add a message. Additionally, the laser etching allows for the kit parts to be numbered, making installation even easier.

Clever employment of attachable and detachable systems will allow for low voltage outdoor lighting options, drinks holders for garden parties or trendy bar installations, and even noughts and crosses.

With the right choice of materials, the system has evolved into a very crisp modern design which can be adapted to many environments where a new elegant and different approach provides a stylish solution.

Its patented system combines both practical and visual qualities, so you can quickly create stunning focal points, sight lines, partitions or screened of areas in your garden.”

Added extras

Through their partnership with GovGrant, CDT were also able to add value with advice on HMRC R&D tax credits, allowing Kangular to get benefits on their investment of this new system.

What’s next?

Kangular officially launched their range at Grand Designs Live this October. New projects for 2020 are to increase the Kangular range to bespoke garden furniture and Kangular interior products.
